Cosmos will keep flowering through heat waves that stop other plants cold, branching taller as you deadhead and rewarding you with new buds until November. Plant them in full sun and lean soil—they actually prefer it sparse—and step back.

These 4" transplants go in the ground or a big pot anytime March through June, then feed the vase and the garden for months. Deer leave them alone, and so do most pests.
