Goldsturm is the black-eyed Susan most gardens are built around: masses of golden-yellow daisies with dark brown cones from midsummer well into fall, on sturdy two-foot clumps that come back stronger each year. Bees and butterflies work the flowers, and finches pick the seedheads later.

Plant it in full sun in just about any soil, including clay. Once established it handles drought and needs little beyond a spring cutback. Deadhead for tidiness, or leave the dark seedheads standing for winter interest and the birds.
