Foamflower is a Southeastern woodland native, and Oakleaf is a selection with deeply lobed, oak-shaped leaves that form low, tidy clumps under a foot tall. In late spring and summer, slender spikes of frothy white flowers rise above the foliage like little bottlebrushes.

It belongs in shade or part shade in moist, woodsy soil with plenty of leaf mold or compost worked in. Deer and rabbits leave it be, while bees and butterflies visit the blooms. Use it in drifts along a shaded path or at the feet of hydrangeas.
