Field-grown orange pumpkins with stems intact, hard-shelled and sold by size — the small ones for stacking and table work, the big ones for carving.

Keep them on a dry porch, off wet ground; uncarved they last weeks, carved only days. Lift by the body, never the stem — a snapped stem is where rot starts.
