This is the classic black-eyed Susan: golden-yellow daisies with dark brown centers held above sturdy green foliage from early summer well into fall. It delivers steady color through the hottest months, and bees, butterflies, and seed-hunting finches all put it to use.

Give it full sun and average soil; it handles drought, clay, deer, and Birmingham humidity without complaint. Deadhead through summer for more bloom, or leave the late seed heads standing for the goldfinches. Cut it back in late winter and plant in drifts for the biggest effect.
