This columbine bears fully double blooms in red and white, layered like little origami above lacy blue-green foliage. Flowers rise on wiry stems in spring, right when hummingbirds return to Birmingham, and they notice.

Plant it in morning sun with afternoon shade and well-drained soil. Columbines here often rest through high summer, so pair them with later perennials; let a few seed heads stand and you'll get volunteers. Deer and rabbits leave the foliage alone.
