Bird of paradise is a bold tropical with big, paddle-shaped, banana-like leaves on tall stems, and on mature plants, the famous orange and blue flowers that resemble a crested bird's head. Even without a bloom it makes a strong architectural houseplant that fills a bright corner.

Give it the sunniest spot you have; several hours of direct light helps. Let the top inch or two of soil dry between waterings. Plants need real maturity, often five years or more, plus strong light and regular feeding before they flower, so enjoy the foliage and treat blooms as the bonus.
