Play sand is washed and screened, for sandboxes and as a leveling base under stepping stones and pavers. Don't use it to loosen clay — sand mixed into clay actually compacts tighter. Use gypsum or compost instead.

Spread as your base layer, or stir a little into a seed-starting mix for sharper drainage.
