The money tree is a tropical from Central and South America, traditionally braided young so several flexible green trunks intertwine into one decorative stem topped with glossy, hand-shaped leaves. Plenty of people grow one for the folklore of luck and prosperity; the rest of us grow it because it is handsome and undemanding.

Set it in bright, indirect light and water only when the top inch or two of soil has dried; steady sogginess is what does these in. It appreciates extra humidity but manages fine in normal rooms. The braid will not tighten as it grows; it simply thickens in place.
