Fanal is a classic red astilbe, sending up deep crimson flower plumes in early summer over lacy, bronze-tinted dark green foliage. The feathery spikes hold their color for weeks and bring rich tone to shade plantings that usually run to whites and pastels. Clumps stay compact, around 1 to 2 feet tall and wide.

Astilbes want shade to part shade and steady moisture; here in Birmingham, keep them out of afternoon sun and never let the roots bake dry. They are happy at pond edges, in low spots, and among hostas and ferns. Deer and rabbits pass them by.
