Astilbe Deutschland carries upright, snow-white flower plumes over glossy, ferny foliage in late spring and early summer, one of the earlier astilbes to color up. The plumes reach about two feet and read beautifully against dark shade, then hold form as they fade.

This is a plant for moist shade. Here in Birmingham it wants protection from afternoon sun and soil that never bakes dry, so work in compost and mulch well. It tolerates wet spots, shrugs off deer and rabbits, and pairs naturally with hostas and ferns.
