Everlast is a dianthus, a low mound of blue-grey foliage topped with fringed, clove-scented flowers in magenta and white, mainly through late spring. Shear it after the first flush and you'll often get a second round of bloom before summer's heat sets in.

Plant it in full sun in lean, well-drained soil, because rich wet ground is what rots these in our clay. Set it at the front of a border or let it spill over a low wall, where the drainage is naturally better and the scent carries when you walk by.
