Deep rose tubular flowers ride upright stems from late spring into summer, and hummingbirds will find them. Mission Bells Deep Rose is a penstemon, a beardtongue that holds a neat, vertical habit and keeps the border from going flat.

Plant in full sun, and make drainage the first priority, because Birmingham's clay will rot these roots if water sits around them. Keep the soil lean rather than rich, and cut the stems back after the main flush to encourage a tidier second round.
