Ostrich Plume is an astilbe with arching, feathery flower heads in coral-pink that drape rather than stand stiff, giving the plant a softer, fountain-like look in bloom. The ferny foliage stays attractive before and after the summer show.

Astilbes want shade and moisture in Birmingham; a spot with morning light and consistently damp, compost-rich soil keeps them happy. They're one of the few bloomers for genuinely wet, shady corners. Deer and rabbits leave them alone; bees and butterflies don't.
