Bilberry, from the Indian Summer series of coral bells, forms a neat evergreen mound of rounded, richly colored leaves under a foot tall, topped in season by slender wands of small white bells. Like all heucheras it earns its space with foliage that looks good twelve months a year.

Give it part shade to shade in moist, well-drained soil worked with compost; morning light deepens the leaf color, but shield it from hot afternoon sun. Deer pass on it, while bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds visit the flower stems. Groom off tired leaves in early spring.
