Guatemala Papaya is a coneflower with daisy-form blooms in a soft papaya-orange, the color carried in its name, opening over a raised cone centre through the heat of summer. The plant forms a sturdy, upright clump that holds its flowers well above the foliage.

Coneflowers are native prairie plants, and in Birmingham the thing that kills them is wet winter ground, not cold. Plant it in full sun in soil that drains freely, and it will be drought tolerant once established. Deadhead for more flowers, or leave the cones standing for the goldfinches. It suits a sunny border or a meadow-style planting.
