Paint the Town Magenta is a dianthus, or pink, forming low mounds of blue-grey foliage topped with fringed magenta flowers. The blooms come mainly in late spring, and the flowers are clove-scented. Shearing after the first flush can bring a second round of bloom.

Plant it where the sun is strong and the soil is lean and fast-draining, since rich wet ground is what rots these out here. It works well at the front of a border or spilling over a low wall, where the grey foliage keeps its shape between flushes.
