Cosmos stretches your cutting garden through heat that wilts fussier flowers—plant it in May and you'll have long stems for the vase all summer long. Once established, it needs almost nothing: sun, decent drainage, and then you step back and let it ramble.

Deadhead to keep flowers coming, or let it scatter seed for next year's volunteers. In August, a second planting gives you blooms right through September before frost.
