Mr. Goodbud is an upright border sedum with stems stout enough to stay standing: gray-green succulent foliage all season, then broad heads of deep purplish-pink flowers from late summer into fall, right when pollinators need them. The dried seed heads keep their architecture through winter.

Full sun and well-drained soil keep the clump compact; rich or damp ground makes sedums sprawl. Once established it needs almost no supplemental water, and deer and rabbits leave it be. Cut the old stems down in late winter rather than fall, and enjoy the frost-dusted heads.
