The ZZ plant is about as forgiving as houseplants get: thick underground rhizomes store water, and glossy, dark green leaflets line upright stems that look almost polished. It keeps its good looks in offices, bedrooms, and other dim corners where most plants give up.

Water only when the soil has dried out completely, every few weeks in most homes, and less in winter. It tolerates low light but grows faster in moderate, indirect light. Use a well-draining mix and a pot with a drainage hole. A little neglect suits it fine.
