A small-faced viola with purple and yellow petals that brightens fall and winter color beds when bigger bloomers have faded. Plant it in October for immediate color, or hold it through December for spring planting once the worst cold has passed.

Violas tolerate shade and lean soil better than pansies, and they'll flower steadily through mild spells without complaint. Space them close—they stay compact—and pinch them back if they get leggy.
