Centipede sod is slow growing and produces a low, weed-free turf. It requires little maintenance along low fertility conditions. Centipede is somewhat shade tolerant but grows best in full sun. It adapts well in sandy, acidic soil. Unlike Bermuda grass, Centipede does not have a dormant state and can be damaged by cold weather below 15 degrees. With the spreading growth pattern, it is easily controlled around walkways and flowerbeds.

Size: 24 inches x 16 inches; roughly 2.5 square feet

Watering: Determining the soil type, sandy or clay based, tells you how frequent you should water. With a more sandy soil, grass should be watered more frequently because of the drainage of water through a sandy soil. On the other hand, with a more clay based soil grass should be watered less frequently because of the ability for the soil to hold water.

(Tip for clay based soil: a good way to increase the drainage of water is to till up the clay and mix in a few bags of top soil so that there will be a place for the water to go.)

Fertilizing: Unlike Bermuda and Zoysia grasses, Centipede does not require much fertilization at all and cannot follow our lawn guide provided on our website. Instead, Centipede should be fertilized based on a soil test. It is good to use a phosphorus-free fertilizer like 15-0-15.
