About this plant
Winter Gem is one of the hardiest of the small-leaved boxwoods, a dense evergreen with rich green foliage that shears beautifully into low hedges, globes, and formal edging. In a cold winter the leaves can bronze slightly, and it is among the first to green back up in spring.
It matures around two to three feet and takes sun to part shade. Plant it in well-drained soil, mulch lightly, and avoid soggy spots. Shear in late spring after the new growth flushes, with a light touch-up in summer if you keep it formal.
