Upright plum yew gives you a narrow column of soft, dark evergreen needles reaching 8–10 feet tall and 6–8 feet wide, and it succeeds where true yews and junipers struggle: it tolerates deep shade and Birmingham's heat and humidity without scorching, and deer generally leave it alone.

Plant it in part shade to full shade, where it will look best. Its upright habit suits narrow side yards, shaded corners, and the back of a border, giving structure where little else will grow.
