The cinnamon cactus is a prickly pear relative whose flat pads are dotted with tufts of cinnamon-rust glochids instead of long spines, giving it a soft, freckled look. Do not let the fuzz fool you: those tiny bristles detach at a touch, so handle it with tongs or a folded towel.

Give it full sun, a fast-draining cactus mix, and water only when the soil has dried out completely, even less in winter. It is happy outdoors in summer heat but needs to come inside ahead of frost. Skip the misting and heavy feeding; benign neglect suits it.
