Orchid potting bark is chunky fir — not soil. Orchid roots evolved to grip tree bark in open air, so they need those gaps to breathe; ordinary potting soil suffocates them and causes rot.

Pot orchids and epiphytes straight into bark. Repot every 1–2 years, since aged bark compacts and holds too much moisture.
